Forest Planning

Keys to good forest management

  • Know what you have;
  • Know what your land is capable of producing;
  • Have a clear set of ownership objectives and goals; and,
  • Develop and pursue a sound forest management plan.

Vision Forestry’s expert planners begin by collecting and organizing data about the property into a Geographic Information System (GIS), including:

  • High-resolution aerial photography;
  • Soil types, slope and aspect characteristics;
  • Watersheds, streams, ponds, wetlands;
  • Special wildlife habitats or species concerns, if any;
  • Identification of stands (areas with similar species and size characteristics that can be managed as one unit) with data on their current size, condition, and timber volume; and,
  • Any special areas requiring protection or special management, as well as any recreational or other opportunities that may exist.

 This resource assessment establishes the current situation and provides the background for sustainable forest management planning.  Working with the owner to establish a clear set of ownership goals and objectives, Vision Forestry develops a management plan based on modern silvicultural techniques, guided by locally-adapted forest growth and yield models to illustrate:

  • How the owner’s objectives can be achieved in the future;
  • What management activities will be required to meet those objectives;
  • How ownership revenues and costs will respond to those activities; and,
  • How the health, condition and value of the forest will change into the future.
